10 Things to Know Before Buying Australian Craft Gin

The Australian spirit market has become one of the most dynamic craft distilling scenes in the world — here's what actually matters before you commit to a bottle.

With hundreds of local bottles vying for space on home bar carts, choosing the right one goes beyond grabbing the prettiest label on the shelf. Whether you're after an everyday G&T workhorse, hunting for competition-level spirits, or picking something for a gift, here's what to look for before buying Australian craft gin.

01

Botanical leads dictate the cocktail

Not all gins serve the same purpose in a glass. Distillers build recipes around specific botanical hero notes that complement different drinks:

  • Citrus-forwardDriven by bergamot, finger lime or sunrise lime. Excels in highballs, Southsides, and crisp G&Ts with a light Mediterranean tonic.
  • Savoury & botanicalHeavy on native pepperberry, saltbush or eucalyptus. Ideal for dry Martinis and Red Snappers.
  • Piney & traditionalHeavy juniper backbone, built for heavy-tonic G&Ts and bold Negronis.

For maximum versatility at home, a citrus-led small-batch gin — such as a bergamot-forward profile like Sydney's Lume Gin — offers a vibrant, fragrant punch that cuts cleanly through mixers.

02

"Small-batch" means production precision, not just marketing

The term small-batch gin gets thrown around a lot, but authentic micro-distilling comes down to still size and process control. True craft distilleries run small copper pot stills — often capped at strictly limited runs, like Lume Gin's 100 bottles per batch — letting the distiller make precise cuts to capture only the cleanest "heart" of the run and discard the harsh compounds either side of it.

03

Decode award medals and competition standards

When hunting for an award-winning gin, look at where the medal was earned. Recognised international and national shows — the London Spirits Competition, Bartenders Spirits Awards, and the Australian Gin Awards — use strict double-blind judging by active industry experts, top mixologists and spirits buyers.

Why it matters

These competitions judge on three real-world factors: quality, value and packaging. A medal from a show like this — such as Lume Gin's Gold medal wins — confirms the liquid meets rigorous benchmarking for competition-level spirits, both on the palate and in the glass.

04

Base spirits drive the texture

The underlying neutral spirit used during distillation sets the mouthfeel:

  • Grain — wheat / barleyA clean, crisp finish with a classic dry mouthfeel.
  • Grape / wine baseA lush, silky, slightly sweeter texture that carries essential oils beautifully.
  • Sugar cane / molassesA lighter, slightly rounded profile.
05

Higher ABV retains essential botanical oils

Botanical essential oils dissolve in alcohol, not water. Gins bottled at higher strengths — 42–45% ABV and above — retain a greater concentration of delicate citrus and floral oils. Mixed with tonic or ice, these oils louche and release concentrated aromas that lower-proof commercial gins lose during heavy dilution.

06

Regional native botanicals define Australian gin

Australia's native flora gives local distillers a flavour toolkit found nowhere else globally. Look for these signature native botanicals on the label:

  • Lemon myrtle & aniseed myrtleIntense lemon-citrus with subtle liquorice aromas.
  • Tasmanian pepperberryWarm, lingering spice without the harshness of black pepper.
  • Bergamot & finger limeBright, tart citrus aromatics that lift the nose of the spirit.
07

What to look for when gifting gin

If you're buying for gin gifting, focus on bottles that combine liquid quality with presentation. A standout boutique gin from an independent producer feels deliberate and thoughtful — and choosing an internationally recognised bottle gives the recipient a proven, world-class spirit. Pair it with premium tonic water, dehydrated citrus wheels and quality glassware for a complete gift set.

08

Match the gin to the mixer

A common mistake is pairing a delicate, highly aromatic craft gin with an overpowering, overly sweet commercial tonic. High-sugar tonics mask the subtle botanicals of a boutique spirit. Match bright citrus or floral gins with light Indian or Mediterranean tonics, or try them in a simple soda-and-citrus highball to let the distiller's recipe shine through.

09

Buying direct supports premium gin distilleries

While major retail chains carry popular commercial brands, buying online directly from independent premium gin distilleries gives you access to micro-batch drops, limited seasonal releases and fresh bottling runs. Buying direct supports local craft makers and ensures your bottle hasn't spent months sitting under bright retail lights.

10

Drink it fresh — gin doesn't age in the bottle

Storage tip

Unlike whisky or oak-aged spirits, gin doesn't improve once sealed in glass. The volatile compounds that give craft gin its vibrant citrus aroma and floral top notes gradually fade after opening. Keep your bottle in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, and enjoy it while those fresh botanical oils are at their peak.

Lume Botanical Gin Wins Gold at the 2026 London Spirits Competition

Lume Botanical Gin, a craft gin from Sydney, Australia, claimed a prestigious Gold medal at the 2026 London Spirits Competition. The win marks a strong endorsement from one of the industry's most commercially-minded judging panels, which evaluates spirits not just on taste, but on value for money and shelf appeal — factors that actually drive purchase decisions.

Now in its ninth year, the London Spirits Competition judges each entry across three weighted criteria — Quality, Value, and Packaging — producing a score that reflects how a spirit performs in the real world. Entries are first blind-tasted by a panel of active trade professionals, including spirits buyers and mixologists, before price and packaging are factored in. To reflect the importance of the drinking experience, Quality is given double weight in the final score calculation.

The 2026 competition drew entries from more than 30 countries. This year's judging brought together over 70 top industry experts and elite buyers, including names like Stephanie Macleod (Master Blender for Bacardi) and Craig Wallace (Master Blender at Diageo), lending exceptional credibility to the process.

"The authority of a London Spirits Competition award comes from the quality of the judges and the fact that it reflects what consumers and buyers actually want. We're thrilled that Lume Botanical Gin performed so well on this global stage."

Lume Gin Finds a New Home at Quakers Hat Brewing!

We've got some exciting news to share from the northern beaches of Sydney! We're thrilled to announce that Lume Gin is now proudly available at Quakers Hat Brewing, the awesome brewery nestled in Manly Vale.

Our connection with Quakers Hat began at the recent Cork & Fork festival, where we had the pleasure of meeting Cam Robinson, the passionate mind behind Quakers Hat Brewing. Cam, a true connoisseur, really connected with our gins, and we knew right away this was a partnership we wanted to explore.

Since then, we've visited their incredible brewery, soaking in the unique atmosphere and even snapping some fantastic photos of Lume Gin alongside Cam and our own Lume Gin co-founders. It's always special when you find kindred spirits who appreciate quality and craftsmanship as much as you do.

A little bit about Quakers Hat Brewing

For those unfamiliar with the story, Quakers Hat Brewing is a true local gem with a fascinating origin. While their name comes from the calm and tranquil Quakers Hat Bay in Mosman, a hidden gem of Sydney's North Shore, the brewing magic actually happens in Manly Vale.

Founded by Cam Robinson, along with his parents Dave and Sue, Quakers Hat Brewing moved into their creekside venue in September 2019. They were incredibly fortunate to set up shop just before COVID-19 hit, allowing them to focus on wholesale production during the lockdown period when packaged alcohol sales soared.

When they finally opened their taphouse in February 2022, they transformed the industrial space into something truly unique. Thanks to Dave and Sue's antique business, the brewery boasts 18th and 19th-century chairs and tables, alongside extravagant chandeliers, giving it a rustic, almost medieval charm. It's a place where you can truly feel the history and dedication that has gone into creating this space.

From Kolsch to gin: a love for quality

Cam's brewing journey began with a love for Kolsch, a beer style he describes as a perfect transition for mainstream beer drinkers looking for something a little more. Their Kolsch remains a core range staple, alongside their Pale Ale, Lager, Red Rye IPA, and Hazy IPA. With eight taps, there's always something new to discover, including seasonal limited releases and local ciders.

The local community has been incredibly supportive of Quakers Hat Brewing, with many regulars making it a weekend tradition. It's this dedication to quality, community, and creating an inviting atmosphere that makes Quakers Hat Brewing such a perfect fit for Lume Gin.

Come and experience the blend

We couldn't be more excited for you to head down to Quakers Hat Brewing in Manly Vale, enjoy their fantastic brews, and now, experience the refreshing taste of Lume Gin in their unique setting. It's a match made in spirits (and beer!) heaven.

A Weekend of Festivals, Flavour & Fantastic People

What a weekend it's been for the Lume Gin team! We had the pleasure of showcasing our handcrafted gins at not just one, but two amazing Sydney festivals — the Pyrmont Festival at Pirrama Park and Cork & Fork by the Riverside at Cleves Park, Putney.

At the Pyrmont Festival, set against the stunning Sydney harbour backdrop, we served up crisp, refreshing G&Ts and introduced festival-goers to the bold and bright spirit of Lume Gin. As part of the Buffalo Vale Distillery stand, we connected with gin lovers, curious sippers, and fellow distillers — the energy was electric.

Then at Cork & Fork by the Riverside, things got even more exciting. With live music, food trucks, and family-friendly fun, this community event brought together local makers and happy crowds. We were thrilled to see so many people walking around with our bright orange Lume Gin bags, bottles in hand and smiles all around.

Cork & Fork by Riverside

It was especially rewarding to meet new customers, hear their feedback, and watch their reactions as they sampled our gin. These events weren't just about sales — they were about building connections, sharing stories, and being part of Sydney's vibrant festival culture.

A huge thank you to the event organisers, our friends at Buffalo Vale Distillery, and everyone who stopped by to support us — especially those who took the time to snap a photo, share a post, or simply enjoy a drink with us.

We're so proud of what we're building at Lume Gin — small-batch, beautifully bold spirits that bring people together. If you spotted us at the festivals, let us know in the comments!

Until the next pour, — The Lume Gin Team

Lume Gin Wins Bronze at the 2025 London Spirits Competition

At the 8th London Spirits Competition, held in London on 25 & 26 March 2025, Lume Gin won a Bronze medal, considered the ultimate seal of approval in the global spirits industry. To achieve this distinction, Lume Gin needed high scores in three categories: Quality, Value, and Packaging.

In contrast to other spirits competitions that often prioritise distilling ability and technical expertise over drinkability, the London Spirits Competition aims to recognise and celebrate the spirits that consumers actually want to buy, whether from a retail store or off a menu at a London restaurant.

What sets the London Spirits Competition apart is its judging process. It goes beyond blind tasting to determine medal winners — judges also evaluate each spirit's label, design, and packaging, assigning a portion of the score based on visual appeal, storytelling effectiveness, and how well the brand's overall presentation aligns with its price point and perceived value for money.

Judging criteria

Winning a London Spirits Competition award requires high scores across all three judging areas. Exceptional quality spirits might not be considered winners if the price and packaging don't resonate with consumers — the competition recognises spirits that excel in both quality and marketability.

A 95-point spirit wouldn't guarantee success if it lacks visual appeal or offers poor value for money. Such a spirit might be well-respected within the industry, but struggle to find buyers on shelves or restaurant menus.

Scoring system

Q (Quality) + V (Value) + P (Package) = London Spirits Competition Score
  • Quality ScoreOut of 100
  • Value ScoreOut of 100
  • Package ScoreOut of 100

Each judging category receives a separate weighted score. These are then combined to produce a final score that determines individual awards.

Who are our judges?

The London Spirits Competition is judged by a panel of leading spirits buyers with current commercial buying experience, or spirits consultants and experts directly involved in developing new spirit brands or purchasing spirits for resale. Judges represent a diverse range of channels and disciplines, including multiple retailers, convenience stores, distributors, on-trade groups, casual and fine dining establishments, hospitality, and the travel industry.

"The authority of a London Spirits Competition award comes from the power of being judged across quality, value, and appearance, the high caliber of the judges, and the intensely competitive product set. We are thrilled that our Lume Gin performed so well. This Bronze medal demonstrates that we are creating the types of spirits that bar managers and mixologists want to use, and spirits that drinkers enjoy choosing and consuming."
